Video: Polytechnic Student Dies After Alleged Police Chase Ends In Well

A student of Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku has reportedly died after allegedly being chased by police officers and a local vigilante operative in Delta State.

The police complaint unit made the disclosure in a post on X while responding to allegations raised by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu.

According to Mr Gwamnishu, the student was allegedly pursued by police officers alongside a civilian hunter over an offence that had not yet been disclosed.

He stated that during the chase, the student unknowingly ran into an area containing an uncovered well filled with water and fell inside.

The hunter reportedly fell into the same well while attempting to pursue him.

“Today (Thursday), a tragic incident involving a Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic student and a civilian Nigeria Police, Area Command Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State,” Mr Gwamnishu wrote.

“Police officers alongside a civilian hunter allegedly chased a student without considering the dangers around the environment. Unknown to the young man, there was an open well filled with water. He fell inside, and the hunter chasing him also fell into the same well. Sadly, both were brought out dead.”

The Nigeria Police Force later confirmed the fatal pursuit.

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, said officers involved in the incident had already been identified.

The spokesman for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, also confirmed the development and stated that further details would be provided as investigations continue.
