According to a report by Nigerian Tribune, on Sunday May 17, 2026, the Archbishop Metropolitan and Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Henry Ndukuba, has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan not to return to partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general election.
Ndukuba stated that Jonathan should remain a respected statesman and noted that the former president has already earned a strong place in Nigeria’s democratic history, he pointed to Jonathan’s decision to accept defeat in the 2015 presidential election as a major example of peaceful leadership.. The cleric explained that returning to active politics could reduce the respect and international recognition Jonathan currently enjoys, he said the former president has become a symbol of peaceful transition of power in Africa, he said this reputation should be protected.
According to him, Jonathan has a role that goes beyond political ambition, he described him as a senior national figure who should guide younger leaders and encouraged him to continue serving the country through advice and moral leadership instead of contesting elections.
The Anglican leader praised Jonathan’s time in office, he said his leadership style reflected calmness and tolerance during difficult political moments and added that many people still view Jonathan as an example of integrity in public service.
“Don’t contest for presidency. We don’t want you to spoil that good name and please, keep off for now, let them just play it. Be the senior citizen that you should be,” Ndukuba said.
