The Postmasburg Regional Court has handed down a 15-year prison sentence to 33-year-old Lethlogonolo Mothupi for the brutal rape of a 29-year-old woman in Boichoko location, Postmasburg.

The accused, who was known to the victim at the time, aggressively demanded sexual intercourse.

When the victim courageously refused Mothupi’s demands, the situation escalated violently. The court was informed that Mothupi assaulted her by hitting her with a rock on her head before proceeding to rape her. This heinous act of violence underscores the severe threat posed by perpetrators of gender-based violence.

Following the trial, the court found Lethlogonolo Mothupi guilty of rape. In addition to the 15-year direct imprisonment, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be permanently recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders.

This registry serves as a crucial tool for monitoring and preventing future offenses by convicted sex offenders.

The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended both the Investigation and Prosecution teams for their exemplary work in securing this conviction.

General Otola emphasized that Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remains a critical priority for the Criminal Justice Cluster in South Africa.

“The police will continue to advocate for strengthened partnerships in protecting women and children,” General Otola stated, reaffirming law enforcement’s commitment to tackling these pervasive issues.

She also encouraged the public to actively participate in the “RATE OUR SERVICE” online survey to assist the police in improving their services and to report criminal activities via the MySAPS App or the 08600 10111 Crime Stop number.

This ongoing appeal for public cooperation highlights the shared responsibility in creating safer communities and ensuring that justice is served for victims of violent crime.
