Igboho explained that membership of the security network would be voluntary and free of charge, urging interested individuals across the southwest to participate in defending their communities.

Videos and photos from the launch ceremony quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerians.

During the event, the 53-year-old activist issued a strong warning to kidnappers, insurgents and armed gangs allegedly operating within the southwest region, declaring that they should leave the area or “face the worst.”

He also promised that the newly formed security outfit would actively safeguard lives and properties across Yoruba communities, adding that contact details of coordinators in different locations would soon be made public for volunteers willing to join the initiative.

Igboho further lamented the worsening insecurity in the southwest, accusing criminal groups of converting forest reserves in the region into operational bases for kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes.

However, the development has triggered concern among some Nigerians, with one citizen in a viral reaction video questioning the wisdom behind allegedly allowing the activist access to firearms.

The critic argued that Sunday Igboho should not have been licensed to bear arms under any circumstances, warning that the creation of such a group could escalate security tensions and pose a threat to national stability if not properly regulated.

The individual further expressed fears that authorising non-state actors to operate armed security structures could deepen ethnic tensions and encourage the proliferation of militia groups across the country.

The controversy has continued to generate intense debate online, with supporters of Igboho insisting that local communities have a right to defend themselves amid growing insecurity, while critics argue that only officially recognised security agencies should be permitted to carry weapons and enforce security operations in Nigeria.
