In a statement on Sunday, Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon, confirmed that the officer had been identified and taken into custody for disciplinary proceedings.
“The Nigeria Police Force has taken firm and decisive action following the circulation of a video on social media showing a police officer in camouflage uniform displaying conduct grossly inconsistent with the standards of the Force,” the statement said.
It added that the Ekiti State Police Command swiftly traced and identified the officer as a sergeant serving at Ikole-Ekiti Division before detaining him.
According to the Force, the officer will undergo a comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation as part of the disciplinary process.
“The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has directed a comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation of the officer. This assessment is a mandatory prerequisite to the formal disciplinary process,” the statement noted.
Police authorities said the evaluation would help determine whether any underlying health condition contributed to his behaviour.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, also condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable and inconsistent with professional policing standards.
“The Inspector-General of Police… unequivocally condemns the conduct displayed in the video as a gross deviation from the discipline, professionalism, and decorum required of every member of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read.
The Force further reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on substance abuse and any conduct capable of undermining public trust in the institution.
“The Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward substance abuse and any behaviour that undermines the integrity of the uniform or erodes public trust in the institution,” it added.
The viral clip, which surfaced on Saturday, continues to circulate widely across social media platforms, prompting renewed debate on discipline and welfare within the police system.
