Bankole managed to flee the scene but was later arrested by police after Abdullahi reported the incident at the Ifo Police Division.
In an emotional account, Abdullahi explained that his wife has been battling mental health issues since her first marriage.
“She had surgery complications that triggered the problem. Her ex-husband abandoned her, saying he couldn’t live with a mentally ill person,” he said.
Her family tried prayer houses without success before Abdullahi stepped in, helped them financially, and eventually married her. The couple now has a two-year-old child, and he says her condition has been improving, though she’s not fully recovered. He kept her mostly indoors for safety.
On Tuesday, Abdullahi returned from Lagos Island only to find Bankole on top of his wife.
“I wanted to kill him. I had a cutlass and knife, but I held back,” he recounted. A fierce fight broke out — Bankole tore his clothes, bit him, and tried to seize the cutlass. Neighbours eventually pulled them apart, but Abdullahi held onto Bankole’s trousers, which contained his driving licence, phones, cash, and ATM cards — key evidence that helped lead to his arrest.
Tope, an indigene of Osun State, told police the suspect was a stranger to her.
“He entered our compound, asked if I wanted to eat, and gave me N200. He later returned, asked me to undress, put me on the bed and had sex with me. I knew he wasn’t my husband but I couldn’t shout or resist,” she said. When her husband burst in, she ran to call neighbours.
A human rights lawyer, Isaac Durowoju, who is following the case, claimed Bankole has been boasting that “nothing will happen to him.” He also accused the Investigating Police Officer of not taking the matter seriously enough. Abdullahi has reportedly rejected mediation, citing fears of possible HIV infection, cultural implications, and uncertainty about the suspect’s intentions.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the arrest.
“The suspect has confessed. He took advantage of the woman’s mental condition. He will be charged to court,” Oyeyemi said.
The case has left residents in the area in disbelief, with many calling for justice for the vulnerable young mother. Developments are being monitored.
