There were “no signs or warnings,” according to one woman who suffered from a detrimental dental diagnosis, but for years, it would hinder her from living her fullest life.
Ayana Headspeth, a 38-year-old lifestyle content creator from Maryland, suffered from debilitating pain from a 2018 diagnosis of periodontal disease. The gum infection, which can cause loss of teeth, eventually turned more severe the following year due to genetic predisposition.
What began as one loose tooth turned into bleeding gums and “random mouth pains” so intense they “would subsequently cause migraines, making it hard to focus or even function doing minor daily task,” Headspeth tells PEOPLE.
The shifting of her teeth became “unbearable,” and equally excruciating was having eight of her teeth pulled out — in addition to losing two of her already loose teeth (one of which was accidentally knocked out by her newborn). By June 2025, all of her teeth were loose, “some holding on by a thread,” she explains.
But nothing was more impactful than how the disease made taking care of her family that much more challenging. Everything from standing and cooking for her kids to joining them and her husband for a meal out felt daunting and limiting.
“My children would realize I was in pain based on my attitude,” she says. “My children are so beautiful they would try to help by choosing to be more self-sufficient. This hurt my heart because a child should not have to put their own needs aside for my comfort.”
She continues: “I felt like a bad mom. I felt like my teeth embarrassed my children, my husband, everyone. Motherhood is one of my most favorite accomplishments, and I couldn’t even be the best mom ever because my teeth held me back from so much happiness over the years.”
On the internet, where she began posting videos about her journey, the “mean comments” began “rolling in,” which affected her mental health.
