Alexander Omogiate was reportedly killed instantly, while other passengers in the vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Security sources say the attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault, leaving residents and students in panic.

The management of the University of Benin, an institution owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria, has distanced itself from the violent incident, stating that the attack occurred outside campus jurisdiction.

The university described the shooting as an external security issue, stressing that it is cooperating with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Authorities of the institution also urged students to remain calm and avoid panic, assuring that academic activities would continue as scheduled.

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that a full-scale investigation has been launched to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.

Preliminary findings point to possible cult-related violence, a recurring security challenge in parts of Benin City and its surrounding areas. However, investigators say other motives are also being considered as inquiries continue.

Police authorities have increased surveillance around the university axis and adjoining roads in response to the incident.
